Tokat Clock Tower, Clock tower in Tokat, Turkey.
Tokat Clock Tower is a stone structure with four clock faces that display time through a mechanical system working on all sides at once. The tower rises to about 33 meters above the city.
The tower was built in 1902 under Sultan Abdulhamid II to mark his 25 years of reign over the Ottoman Empire. It was part of a wave of clock tower construction across the empire during that era.
The tower has served as a gathering place where people meet and orient themselves in the city. It shapes how residents and visitors experience the downtown area and marks the heart of daily life.
The tower stands in the Behzat district and can be spotted from many locations throughout the city. It chimes every thirty minutes, making it easy to use as an orientation point when navigating downtown.
A specialized clockmaker regularly climbs 133 steps inside the tower to maintain the mechanism. This hands-on maintenance happens roughly every eight days and has kept the machinery running reliably for more than a century.
