Buruciye Medresesi

The Buruciye Medresesi is an Islamic seminary in Sivas featuring intricate stonework at its entrance gate. An open courtyard sits surrounded by four iwans, while the walls are built from cut stone blocks.

The seminary was founded in 1271 under Seljuk rule as a center for mathematics, sciences, and astronomy. It marks an important point in the advanced scholarly training of the medieval Islamic world.

The building shows how religious learning and daily teaching happened under one roof. Visitors can still see today how the prayer room with its prayer niche sits directly next to the study areas.

The building sits on a central square in the old town and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should note that the site is actively used and interior areas may not always be accessible depending on prayer times.

The entrance vault differs noticeably from typical Seljuk building patterns and shows experimental architectural features of its time. This departure makes it an interesting example of local building movements beyond established styles.
