IXL Historical Museum
IXL Historical Museum, Queen Anne style architectural museum in Hermansville, Michigan, United States.
The IXL Historical Museum is housed in a two-story wooden structure with painted wood siding and ornamental details typical of its era. The building features a distinctive red emblem at its entrance that identifies the organization.
The building was constructed in 1882 to serve as the administrative center for Wisconsin Land & Lumber Company's timber operations. It earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
The museum displays office furnishings and business records from the lumber industry era that show how the company operated day to day. Visitors can see how workers managed their tasks and what objects filled their workspace.
The museum sits near US-2 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and is best reached by car from nearby towns. Inside, the space has narrow passages and uneven floors typical of historic wooden buildings, so visitors should move carefully.
Every piece of flooring produced by the company carried a marking that stood for the motto 'I excel' as a pledge of manufacturing quality. This simple mark became the symbol by which the business and its workers became known throughout the region.
