Lost River Caverns, Natural limestone cavern in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, United States.

Lost River Caverns is a limestone cave system in Hellertown featuring five major chambers connected by passages where an underground river flows continuously. The formations display stalactites and stalagmites that have developed slowly over millions of years through mineral deposits from water seepage.

The cavern was discovered in 1883 when quarrying workers broke through into the underground system unexpectedly. It opened to the public in 1930 and has remained a destination for visitors ever since.

The caverns serve as a learning space where visitors discover how water shapes underground landscapes over thousands of years. Families often visit to introduce children to geology and the hidden side of nature.

Be ready for steps and uneven pathways since the cave has natural obstacles and passages that can be steep in places. The temperature remains cool year-round, so bring a jacket even on warm days outside.

The underground river flowing through these caverns remains scientifically mysterious because researchers have never located its source or where it finally emerges. This unsolved puzzle draws scientists and curious visitors who wonder about the hidden workings of the cave.
