Bethlehem Steel Lehigh Plant Mill No. 2 Annex
Bethlehem Steel Lehigh Plant Mill No. 2 Annex, Industrial heritage site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States
The Bethlehem Steel Lehigh Plant Mill No. 2 Annex is a brick industrial building from the 1940s covering about 4.5 acres with two stories and structural elements typical of steel-mill architecture. The complex now houses residential condominiums, retail businesses, and parking facilities within its original industrial framework.
Built between 1940 and 1942, it functioned as a surface preparation and finishing mill for the company's Alloy and Tool Steel Division during wartime production. Its strategic importance to national manufacturing during World War II became a key reason for its later historic designation.
The name reflects its former role as a secondary production facility within a larger industrial complex that once dominated the region's economy. Today, residents and workers occupy the transformed space, creating a living reminder of how industrial structures can serve new purposes while honoring their heritage.
The site sits at West 2nd Street in Bethlehem and functions as a mixed-use space with both residential and commercial areas. Keep in mind that much of the building houses private residences and businesses, so access may be restricted to public areas.
The structure received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 for its role in American wartime manufacturing. This listing marks it as an officially acknowledged piece of the nation's industrial heritage.
