Shade River State Forest

Shade River State Forest is a state forest in Meigs County covering approximately 2,475 acres of land. The terrain displays a mix of hardwood and conifer stands spread across rolling hills in southeastern Ohio.

The forest developed in the 1950s through conversion of abandoned farmland into pine plantations. Various pine species including Virginia pine were planted to restore the woodland.

The forest management practices demonstrate the balance between commercial timber production and environmental preservation through selective Virginia pine harvesting.

The area offers multiple hiking trails and observation points for visitors. Basic facilities including restrooms are available, and activities like walking, hunting, and birdwatching are popular.

The forest supports around 70 bird species that draw birdwatchers to the area. From certain vantage points, visitors can also catch glimpses of the Ohio River and the Belleville Locks and Dam near Reedsville.
