Spring Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, State wildlife area in Tazewell County, Illinois
Spring Lake is a wildlife area featuring a lake that runs 8.5 miles parallel to the Illinois River and is bordered by sandstone bluffs. The lake reaches depths up to 10 feet (3 meters) across its 2,032 acres, with five hiking trails threading through pine plantations and oak-hickory woodlands.
The area was first acquired in 1950 with 632 acres as its initial holding. Expansions and dam construction in the 1950s shaped the site into its current form.
The area draws birdwatchers who observe migratory waterfowl and other species throughout the year. Many visitors time their visits to seasonal movements to experience the rich variety of wildlife present.
The lake has four boat ramps for engines up to 25 horsepower, with roughly 70 camping spots divided between Pine and Oak Campgrounds. Visitor facilities vary in accessibility depending on season and weather conditions.
The lake system receives 52 acre-feet of spring water daily, keeping temperatures cold and supporting 17 aquatic plant species and diverse fish populations. This constant circulation of cool water creates a distinctive habitat that many fish species depend on.
