Sewall Memorial Torches, sculpture by Gorham Manufacturing Company
The Sewall Memorial Torches are two large bronze sculptures standing outside the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. Each torch features a square base with decorative patterns, a tall fluted column with ornamental details, and a wide radiating disc at the top that originally held a light source.
The torches were installed in 1923, a few years after May Wright Sewall's death in 1920, to honor her contributions to art, education, and women's rights in Indianapolis. Originally positioned outside the art school building, they were relocated and restored before returning to their current location in 2010.
May Wright Sewall is honored in Indianapolis for her work advancing women's rights and education. The torches stand in a public space where visitors regularly pass and learn about her contributions to the city's cultural and social development.
The torches are positioned along the side of the school building and are easily visible from the street. The inscriptions on the bases provide information about Sewall's life and work, making it simple to learn about her contributions while viewing the sculptures.
The bronze torches were manufactured by the Gorham Manufacturing Company from Rhode Island, a firm known for fine metalwork. Over the decades, the bronze has developed a dark green and black patina that gives the sculptures a rich historical character and adds depth to their appearance.
