Sunken Rock Light, Lighthouse on Bush Island in St. Lawrence River, New York, United States.
Sunken Rock Light is a white lighthouse on Bush Island in the St. Lawrence River featuring a conical iron tower built on a stone foundation with a green lantern on top. The structure stands about 9 meters tall and emits green flashes every four seconds to signal safe passage through the waterway.
A brick beacon was originally funded by Congress in 1847 to mark dangerous underwater rocks near the eastern entrance of Wellesley Island narrows. The site was later converted to the iron structure that operates today.
The structure appeared in illustrations of the poem 'Geraldine' in 1886, marking its significance in regional maritime literature.
The lighthouse operates fully automatically without permanent staff stationed on site. Visitors should know that Bush Island is small and access is limited to the exterior areas.
Bush Island is so small it contains only the lighthouse and a boathouse with no keeper quarters. The lighthouse keepers actually lived in Alexandria Bay on the mainland instead.
