Deer Island, Private river island in Alexandria, United States
Deer Island is a roughly 40-acre river island in the Saint Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay, marked by thick woods, stone ruins, and one operational cottage by the shore. The island shows evidence of past fire damage to several buildings, though some structures remain standing today.
The island was acquired in 1949 by the Russell Trust Association and transformed into a private retreat. It has served this purpose as a secluded gathering place ever since.
The island serves as a meeting place for Skull and Bones society members, including former presidents, business leaders, and influential political figures.
The island is privately owned and closed to public access, but you can see it from tour boats operating out of Alexandria Bay. This way, visitors can observe it from the water without stepping ashore.
Several buildings on the island bear fire scars, marking a major fire in its past. These charred structures now form a striking visual element for those viewing from the water.
