George C. Boldt Yacht House, Historic yacht house in Alexandria Bay, New York
The George C. Boldt Yacht House is a wooden structure from the early 1900s with a distinctive circular tower and three central boathouse bays, supplemented by an east boathouse bay and an office wing featuring a crenelated tower. The facility also includes a caretaker residence and sits on a prominent riverside location designed to support the storage and maintenance of large vessels.
Architects G. W. and W. D. Hewitt designed this watercraft facility in 1903 for millionaire George Boldt as part of his riverside estate development. The structure gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 for its architectural importance.
The structure reflects how wealthy families of the Gilded Age managed their watercraft and leisure pursuits on the river. Visitors can observe the practical scale of their recreational boating operations during this prosperous era.
Access is by free shuttle boat service departing from Heart Island, where visitors can also see the historic steam yacht Kestrel and a vintage boat collection. The grounds are open during warmer months, and comfortable shoes are recommended when walking on the wooden structures and pathways.
The interior houses specialized mechanical systems including overhead traveling cranes, steel trusses, and screw jacks designed to move and maintain large watercraft. These mechanical features remain visible today and demonstrate the engineering solutions wealthy owners required to store their vessels safely.
