Welborn Village Archeological Site, Archaeological site near Hovey Lake, Indiana, United States.
Welborn Village Archeological Site is a prehistoric settlement located on elevated ridges along floodplain areas surrounded by swamps. The layout shows how people positioned their communities to take advantage of higher ground near water resources.
This location was an important center from the 1400s through the 1600s when the Caborn-Welborn culture thrived in the region. The settlement demonstrates how people maintained communities in this area between two rivers for several centuries.
Pottery found during excavations shows decorated patterns and varied vessel forms that reflect the skill of local craftspeople. These items reveal how important ceramic production was for both daily life and ritual practices.
The site is fairly level and easy to navigate, being located near where two major rivers meet which helps with orientation. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the surrounding area includes swampy conditions.
Excavations revealed objects of European origin such as copper, brass, and glass beads that arrived through trade well before direct European contact occurred. This discovery suggests the community participated in exchange networks that stretched across vast distances.
