Raymond C. and Mildred Kramer House, Modernist townhouse in Upper East Side, Manhattan, United States.

The Raymond C. and Mildred Kramer House is a six-story residence at 32 East 74th Street that combines a white stucco exterior with glass brick panels and blue steel details. The building displays clean, geometric forms of modernism with a facade defined by illuminated glass brick elements.

Architect William Lescaze designed this residence in 1935 for textile merchant Raymond C. Kramer and his wife Mildred, marking the introduction of modernist principles to this residential neighborhood. Through this project, Lescaze brought industrial materials and bold forms to an area previously shaped by traditional architecture.

The residence reflects a shift toward modern design in a neighborhood traditionally defined by classical brownstones. Visitors can still see today how its bold materials and forms stand apart from the historic structures around it.

The building is visible from the street and sits in a well-connected residential area with good public transit access. Visitors should note that this is a private residence and the interior spaces are not regularly open to the public.

The glass brick facade creates dynamic light patterns inside as daylight passes through, a technical detail rarely seen in modernist homes of that era. This feature makes it an early example of how industrial materials could be used for visual effects in residential spaces.
