Hudson's Site Development, Mixed-use construction site in Downtown Detroit, US
Hudson's Site Development is a mixed-use project that combines a 14-story mid-rise building with a 685-foot tower, which will become Michigan's second tallest skyscraper. The complex occupies a block in the city center, surrounded by streets, shops, and older commercial buildings that line the nearby avenues.
The site once held the flagship store of J.L. Hudson department store, which opened in 1911 and later became known as the tallest department store in the world. After demolition in 1998, the lot remained vacant for years until new plans for redevelopment took shape.
The development integrates public spaces, retail sections, and business areas to establish a central gathering point for Detroit's community activities.
The project is within walking distance of several city transit stops and connects directly to both the elevated rail system and the streetcar line. A parking structure beneath the complex will accommodate 700 vehicles once construction is complete.
General Motors will move its global headquarters into the completed complex, marking the first major return of an automaker to the city center in decades. This choice reflects a shift from retail dominance to mixed commercial and corporate use in the downtown area.
