Son Tra Guanyin
Son Tra Guanyin is a white statue about 70 meters tall standing on a hilltop on the Son Tra Peninsula, representing a goddess of compassion and overlooking the sea. The structure contains 17 interior levels filled with smaller Buddha statues and religious symbols accessible by elevator or stairs, while temples, gardens with bonsai trees, and fountains surround its base.
Construction began in 2004 and finished in 2010, honoring an old fishing tradition where small statues were believed to offer protection at sea. Vietnamese monk Thich Thien Nguyen initiated the project to create a place of worship and reflection for both locals and visitors.
The name Guanyin refers to a goddess of compassion respected across Asian traditions, and her peaceful presence draws visitors seeking reflection. Around the statue, you see people lighting incense, meditating, or sitting quietly, showing how locals and travelers use this place as a space for prayer and personal contemplation.
Wear respectful clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering temples. The site is easily accessible on foot, by motorbike, or car, with early morning and late afternoon being better times when the weather is cooler.
The interior contains 17 floors with the top level dedicated to Buddha himself, offering a cool and peaceful feeling while exploring intricate religious artwork up close. This vertical journey inside such a massive statue is unusual and gives visitors an unexpected experience of spiritual spaces within the monument.
