Altes Funkhaus, Broadcasting facility in Weimar, Germany
The Altes Funkhaus is an architectural structure in Weimar that was originally designed for broadcasting purposes. The building contains multiple halls, office spaces, and a library arranged in a monastery-inspired layout.
Construction began in 1937 as a memorial to Friedrich Nietzsche, but financial constraints led to simplified plans when it was completed in 1940. An air raid shelter was added during World War II, giving the structure additional wartime purposes.
The building served as a regional broadcasting hub for decades. Visitors can see the spaces that were once used for radio production and transmission.
The building is located at Humboldtstrasse 36 in Weimar and is easily accessible from outside. The interior is currently in need of renovation and requires extensive restoration work.
The building once housed furniture belonging to Friedrich Schiller stored in its basement. These pieces were replicas that had been crafted by prisoners from Buchenwald concentration camp.
