Cittaslow, Urban development organization in Orvieto, Italy
Cittaslow is an international network promoting thoughtful urban development and environmental care in towns under 50,000 residents. Member communities must meet standards covering environmental policies, local infrastructure, and the protection of regional traditions.
Paolo Saturnini, former Mayor of Greve in Chianti, founded Cittaslow in 1999 in response to rapid urbanization and standardized city development. The initiative emerged as a reaction against the homogenization of towns worldwide.
Member towns actively preserve their local character by supporting regional food production, protecting traditional crafts, and hosting seasonal festivities that bring residents together.
Visitors can explore the network's work by visiting information centers in member towns or accessing online resources. It helps to attend local markets and community events to see these practices in action.
The network deliberately restricts membership to smaller towns, creating a focused approach to development. This boundary helps preserve close social bonds and local economic structures that larger cities struggle to maintain.
