Orvieto subterranea, Underground archaeological site in Orvieto, Italy

The subterranean network extends through multiple levels beneath Orvieto, featuring numerous tunnels and chambers carved into volcanic tuff rock over centuries.

The underground passages, dating to Etruscan times, functioned as water supply systems, storage facilities, and protective shelters during conflicts throughout different periods.

The walls of these underground chambers contain numerous small quadrangular niches and preserved artifacts that demonstrate the daily activities of past inhabitants.

Guided tours lasting approximately one hour require advance reservations, with access points located near Piazza Duomo and contact available at +39-0763-344891.

The excavated chambers maintain a constant temperature throughout the year, preserving ancient wells, medieval mills, and workshop areas used across multiple centuries.
