Orvieto subterranea, Underground archaeological site in Orvieto, Italy

Orvieto subterranea is an underground network beneath the city of Orvieto, consisting of tunnels and chambers carved into volcanic tuff rock over centuries. The system extends through multiple levels and contains structures from different historical periods.

The underground chambers began as Etruscan constructions and were used for different purposes across thousands of years. From water storage to shelter during conflicts, they show practical adaptation across multiple epochs.

The walls of these underground chambers contain numerous small quadrangular niches and preserved artifacts that demonstrate the daily activities of past inhabitants.

Visits happen through guided tours lasting about one hour that should be booked in advance. Access points are near Piazza Duomo, where you can also get information on-site.

The chambers maintain a constant temperature year-round, preserving wells and mill remnants from different periods. This natural climate control has allowed materials from several centuries to survive.
