Mexican Air Force Museum, Aviation museum in Santa Lucía, Mexico
The Mexican Air Force Museum is an aviation museum on the grounds of Santa Lucia Air Base, north of Mexico City, displaying aircraft from the Mexican Air Force across different eras. The collection covers fighter jets, helicopters, and older planes, arranged across permanent and rotating exhibition spaces.
The institution was founded in 1933 in Mexico City to preserve the history of Mexican military aviation. In 2022 the entire collection moved to Santa Lucia Air Base, where it became open to the general public for the first time.
The museum sits on an active military base, which gives the visit a setting unlike a typical museum. Many of the aircraft still carry their original Mexican Air Force markings, letting visitors see them as they looked during actual service.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and entry is free. Guided tours are available on site and can be helpful for getting the most out of the collection, especially if you are not familiar with Mexican aviation history.
Among the aircraft on display is the first Mexican presidential jet, known as El Mexicano, once used for official state travel. Next to it stands a P-47 Thunderbolt that flew combat missions in the Pacific during World War II as part of Mexico's Squadron 201.
