The Temple of the Feathered Serpent stands as a six-level step pyramid decorated with alternating serpent heads and intricate stone carvings along its edges.
Archaeological excavations in the 1980s revealed over two hundred sacrificial burials beneath the temple, dating between 150 and 200 CE with various burial patterns.
The pyramid features the earliest known representations of the feathered serpent deity, later connected to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl through Mesoamerican religious traditions.
The temple sits at the southern end of the Avenue of the Dead within the Ciudadela complex, which contains a courtyard large enough for 100,000 people.
A tunnel discovered beneath the pyramid in 2003 contains numerous artifacts including seashells, pottery, and greenstone figurines deliberately placed as offerings.
