Montauk Club, Social club in Park Slope, Brooklyn, United States
The Montauk Club is a private social club in Park Slope housed in a building with Venetian Gothic architecture and ornate details. Inside are carved mahogany fixtures, decorative stained glass windows, and multiple dining areas for members to gather and dine.
The club was established in 1889, with its building designed by architect Francis H. Kimball who drew inspiration from a palace on Venice's Grand Canal. This choice of Venetian architecture was striking for Brooklyn and remains the building's defining feature.
The club was founded to bring together people from different religious backgrounds at a time when this was uncommon. This welcoming approach continues to shape the social life within the building today.
The building sits in a lively residential neighborhood and is easy to reach by public transit. Note that this is a private club, so only members and their guests can access the interior spaces.
The building received both the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award and the MASterworks Award for Best Restoration in 2017. These honors recognized the skilled craftsmanship that brought the original beauty of the building back to life.
