Janela do Céu, Scenic viewpoint in Ibitipoca State Park, Brazil

Janela do Céu is a scenic viewpoint in Ibitipoca State Park reached after a substantial mountain hike through Atlantic Forest. Three consecutive waterfalls tumble down the rock face, creating a natural frame that opens toward distant ridges.

This area became protected when Ibitipoca State Park was established, safeguarding the mountain forests and waterfalls for future generations. The park spans across two municipalities in the region.

Local communities from Moreiras maintain traditional practices while serving as starting points for nature expeditions to the observation point.

Reaching this point requires completing a lengthy mountain hike that demands good physical fitness and stamina. Start early in the day and bring adequate water and snacks, as the forest offers limited shelter and facilities.

The name means literally "window to the sky" in Portuguese, referring to how the cascades frame the view above. This natural formation was carved by water flowing through the rock over countless ages.

Natural sites and cultural places in Southeast Brazil

Southeast Brazil spans the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, offering coastal landscapes, mountain villages, caves and waterfalls. The region preserves colonial-era trails, grottos with underground formations and islands with light visitor traffic. Sites show how Brazil developed from colonial times to the present, with 18th-century buildings, gold mining routes and gardens that maintain tropical plant species. Locations include Gruta Luminosa with limestone formations, Praia do Bonete, a remote beach without road access, and Casa da Glória in Diamantina, which displays colonial architecture. Parque Nacional do Caparaó protects mountain elevations with temperate climate, while Sítio Burle Marx in Rio de Janeiro combines landscape architecture and native vegetation. The coast includes quiet bays such as Praia da Fazenda in Ubatuba and rocky formations at Mirante do Pontal do Atalaia. Inland, trails like Caminho dos Escravos pass through historical territory, and Capitólio Canyons offer rock walls over freshwater lakes. The region combines nature and history across different altitudes and climate zones.
