Dunas do Jalapão, Sand dunes in Mateiros, Brazil.

Dunas do Jalapão is a sand dune landscape in Jalapão State Park where golden dunes rise to heights around 40 meters and stretch across the terrain. The formations create rolling hills that contrast with the drier vegetation and scrubland of the surrounding region.

The sand dunes formed through erosion of sandstone from the Serra do Espírito Santo mountains, creating this landscape over time. Indigenous groups developed ways to live and work in this dry environment, using resources from the dunes and surrounding areas for survival.

Local artisans gather golden grass from areas near the dunes to weave baskets and other handcrafted objects that reflect the region's traditions. These skills have been passed down and remain part of daily life for many residents in the area.

Plan a visit between May and September during the dry season when conditions are best for exploring the dunes. Arrange travel from the town of Mateiros using a four-wheel-drive vehicle, as regular cars cannot access the sandy terrain.

Wind patterns continuously reshape the sand formations, constantly moving and changing the dunes over time. This natural process keeps the landscape in motion, making it a dynamic environment that looks different with seasonal changes.
