The dunes extend across 550 hectares, forming large sand mountains next to the Gulf of Mexico with dark, humid sand surfaces.
The Chachalacas dunes mark the location where Hernán Cortés first arrived in 1519 during his expedition to the Mexican territory.
The dunes border the archaeological site of Cempoala, which contains remains of pre-Hispanic settlements dating back to 900 BCE.
Visitors can access the dunes through the town of Úrsulo Galván, where local operators provide equipment for sandboarding and ATV rentals.
The combination of dark sand formations and proximity to coral reefs creates opportunities for both desert and marine activities in one location.
