Great Roots Forestry Spa Resort
The Great Roots Forestry Spa Resort is a hotel and spa facility built on the grounds of a former tea factory in Chajiao Village near New Taipei City. The property spans about 17 hectares and includes hot spring pools, comfortable rooms, forest trails, gardens, and dining options serving Chinese and Western food.
The land was Taiwan's largest tea-processing plant during Japanese rule, established in 1922 and operated by the Mitsui company. After World War II in 1945, the site transitioned through different uses before becoming the spa resort it is today.
The name reflects the distinctive table-shaped tree roots found in the forest, which hold cultural significance as rare natural treasures in Taiwan. Visitors walking through the grounds can observe these formations and experience how the natural environment is respected and valued by the community.
The resort is easily accessible by bus and is close to high-speed rail and train stations in the region. Warmer months offer the best visiting conditions, and travelers should bring extra blankets or warm clothing since nights can be cool at this forest location.
The grounds are home to Taiwan's only low-elevation subtropical rainforest at about 300 meters altitude, with about 600 plant species and over 30 bird species including the protected blue-winged pitta. Beneath the forest lies an untouched hot spring source over 1,500 meters underground with mineral levels higher than typical Japanese and Taiwanese springs.
