Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area, National Forest Recreation Area in Sanxia District, Taiwan
Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area is a mountainous forest zone in Sanxia in northern Taiwan, stretching across elevations from around 300 to 1,700 meters. Waterfalls and maple trees are scattered throughout the terrain.
The forest area received protected status in 1988 to preserve the natural ecosystems of Taiwan's northern mountains. This step was part of broader efforts to guard the island's forests from further damage.
The area has long been home to the Taiya people, who developed sustainable ways of living with the forest. Visitors can still sense this connection to the land in how the mountains are cared for today.
The trails require proper equipment due to steep paths and changeable mountain weather. It is best to visit during drier months and wear sturdy footwear along with rain protection.
The forest is home to uncommon bird species such as the white-throated laughingthrush and the varied tit, which flourish in the humid setting. These bird populations draw birdwatchers and researchers to the area regularly.
