Brookfield Place, Shopping and office complex in Lower Manhattan, New York, United States
Brookfield Place is a shopping and office complex in Lower Manhattan, New York, United States. The complex covers 14 acres and consists of five buildings along the Hudson River, with a glass-roofed atrium called the Winter Garden at its center.
The complex opened in the 1980s as the World Financial Center, designed by architect Cesar Pelli. After a bankruptcy in 1992, Brookfield took over and later renamed it Brookfield Place, investing in modern updates.
The Winter Garden, a large glass-vaulted hall, hosts free art shows and live music that draw office workers and visitors alike. Palm trees stand inside this space, creating a spot where people pause for lunch or a coffee.
The complex is easy to reach on foot from the nearby subway stations and the waterfront. Visitors can enter from several sides, and the main hall offers clear signs to shops, restaurants, and the marina.
The Winter Garden's glass roof is supported by a structure of steel cables, and the space can be transformed for large events. Few visitors realize that the palm trees inside are real and require special care to thrive in the indoor climate.
