National Taiwan Museum of Comics

The National Taiwan Museum of Comics is an arts centre spanning 2.75 hectares with 19 preserved buildings from different architectural periods in central Taichung. The complex displays extensive comic collections across multiple buildings that reflect different styles and eras.

The building complex was originally built in 1937 during Japanese occupation as a training centre for prison officers. It later operated as Taichung Prison before being transformed into its current purpose.

The museum displays extensive collections of Taiwanese comics spanning several decades, including works from local artists and Japanese manga creators. Visitors can trace the development of this art form in the region through the displayed pieces.

The complex is easily accessible by metro via Wuquan Station and offers free admission to all exhibition spaces. Visitors should allow enough time to explore since the grounds cover a large area.

The former prison bathhouse has been transformed into a modern exhibition space where cartoon characters are artfully integrated with the original fixtures. This unexpected blend of history and contemporary art creates a memorable visitor experience.
