National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art museum in Cheongunhyoja-dong, South Korea

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is an art institution in Cheongunhyoja-dong housing multiple exhibition spaces across several levels. The building contains an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, installations, and digital works created by Korean and international artists.

The museum was founded in 1969 and initially occupied space within Gyeongbokgung Palace before moving to Deoksugung in 1973. After several decades at that location, the institution relocated to its current home in 2013.

The museum displays contemporary Korean artworks alongside international pieces, offering visitors insight into current artistic movements and how they develop. Regular rotating exhibitions allow people to see how different regions approach modern and contemporary art creation.

The museum is accessible to visitors from Thursday through Tuesday, with extended hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Plan enough time to explore the various exhibition spaces, especially if you want to see multiple art forms and styles throughout the building.

The institution received a major donation of around 1500 artworks from a private collection, significantly expanding its holdings. This gift allowed the museum to become one of the most substantial repositories of modern Korean art in the region.
