National Palace Museum of Korea, National museum in Sejong-daero, South Korea
The National Palace Museum of Korea is a museum in Sejong-daero that displays over 40,000 royal artifacts and treasures across three floors. The exhibitions are arranged in seven sections that explore different periods and aspects of Korean palace life and craftsmanship.
This institution began in 1908 as the Korean Imperial Museum inside Changgyeonggung Palace. It moved several times before reaching its current location at Gyeongbokgung Palace in 2005.
The collection shows how royalty dressed, celebrated, and performed ceremonies through clothing, jewelry, and ritual objects from the Joseon court. Visitors can see the objects that made up daily royal life and understand what mattered most to those who lived here.
The museum sits in central Seoul near other historical sites and is easy to reach by public transport. The exhibition sections are clearly marked, and visitors can follow the information panels throughout to understand the collections.
The collection holds rare historical documents, including 150 Uigwe volumes that were taken away in 1922 during Japanese occupation. These important texts returned to Korea in 2011 and are now displayed here.
