Government Complex Seoul, Government office in Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea
Government Complex Seoul is a government building in central Seoul, South Korea, that brings together multiple ministries and agencies in one place. It consists of one main building and two annexes, with 19 floors above ground and 3 basement levels.
The complex was built between 1967 and 1970 to meet the growing administrative needs of the South Korean government. It replaced older offices scattered across the city, bringing key departments together in one place for the first time.
The complex stands on ground that has served official purposes for centuries, giving it a strong symbolic presence in the city. Walking past the buildings, visitors can sense that this spot has long been a center of power in Seoul.
The site is an active government facility, so public access is limited and entry often requires special permission. It is worth checking conditions before you go, as parts of the complex may be closed to visitors at any given time.
The construction used techniques that were rarely seen in Korea at the time, including caisson foundations and slip form methods to raise the structure floor by floor. This made the project a reference point for Korean engineers in the decades that followed.
