This subterranean complex extends through multiple levels of tunnels containing numerous tombs carved into the volcanic rock beneath Rome's surface.
The catacombs received their name from Saint Sebastian, a Roman soldier executed during Emperor Diocletian's persecution and buried here in 298 CE.
The site houses ancient Christian frescoes from the fourth century depicting biblical scenes, including the notable representations in the Cubicle of Jonah.
Guided tours operate Monday through Saturday from 9:30 to 17:30, with entrance fees of 10 euros for adults and 7 euros for reduced tickets.
The term 'catacomb' originated from this location's original name 'ad catacumbas,' referring to the natural depression in the terrain near the quarries.
