Alvear Icon Hotel, building in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Alvear Icon Hotel is a postmodern high-rise hotel in Puerto Madero, the waterfront district of Buenos Aires, Argentina, part of the well-known Alvear hotel group. The tower stands close to the Rio de la Plata and features rooms with river-facing views, a rooftop pool, a spa, and several bars and restaurants within the building.
Puerto Madero was built in the late 1800s as Buenos Aires' first modern port, but it fell out of use within decades and stood largely abandoned through much of the 20th century. A major urban renewal effort began in the 1990s, turning the old docks into a new district where buildings like Alvear Icon were later constructed.
Puerto Madero, where the hotel stands, was once a working port and is now one of the most transformed parts of Buenos Aires. Walking along the waterfront, visitors pass public sculptures, the famous Woman's Bridge, and a mix of converted warehouses and glass towers.
The hotel is in Puerto Madero, a flat and easy district to walk through, with the waterfront promenade just outside. From there, the ecological reserve and the city center are both reachable on foot or with a short ride.
Alvear Icon is one of the very few hotels in Buenos Aires to offer certified kosher meals on-site, which is rare in a city of this size. This reflects the long presence of one of South America's largest Jewish communities in the Argentine capital.
