Morelos, Contemporary Indigenous Art Museum in Morelia, Mexico

This museum in Morelia displays contemporary works by indigenous creators in many forms, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, and mixed media pieces. The collection spreads across different gallery spaces to showcase the range of artistic approaches.

The building opened in 2018 and initially featured over 1200 works by Mexican artist Juan Soriano, who worked from 1920 until 2006. Since then, the space has evolved to showcase different contemporary indigenous creators.

Artists from different indigenous communities across Mexico present their work in rotating exhibitions throughout the year. You can see how traditional craft techniques blend with contemporary artistic ideas.

The sculpture garden is accessible every day and provides plenty of space to walk around and spend time between the artworks. You should plan for at least one to two hours to explore both the gallery spaces and the outdoor area comfortably.

The grounds hold an Ahuehuete tree that is around 200 years old, creating a special place to sit and rest. This native tree holds deep cultural roots in Mexican history and adds another layer of meaning to the visit.
