Yun Hsien Resort
Yun Hsien Resort is a mountain resort hotel in Wulai Village, a forested area south of Taipei known for hot springs and rivers. The property covers several levels of wooded hillside, with older buildings, ponds, small waterfalls, and stone paths connecting different parts of the grounds.
The resort opened in the mid-20th century as a getaway for city dwellers from Taipei and was popular for weekend trips for many years. Over time, parts of the property were left without much upkeep, giving the place the layered, worn-in character it has today.
The name Yun Hsien translates roughly to "cloud immortal," drawing on old Chinese ideas about retreating from everyday life to a place above the noise. Walking through the grounds today, with their overgrown paths and dripping rock faces, that feeling of leaving the ordinary world behind still comes through.
The grounds are reached by a cable car that departs from Wulai Village and takes visitors up through the forest. Once inside, expect a lot of stairs and sloped paths, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially when it has been raining.
The property contains a small amusement park that has been largely unchanged for decades and now sits quiet and still among the trees. This combination of an old fairground slowly being reclaimed by the forest gives the place a character that is hard to find elsewhere in Taiwan.
