Zōjōji

This Jōdo-shū sect temple features the main hall, historic gates, Tokugawa shogun mausoleums and a treasure museum housing precious Buddhist artifacts and religious objects.

Established in 1393, the temple became the Tokugawa family temple during the Edo shogunate period and served as a burial site for several shoguns until the Meiji restoration.

The temple hosts traditional Buddhist ceremonies, seasonal festivals and preserves ancient sutras, Buddha statues and religious art objects in its treasure house collection.

Open daily, accessible from Shimbashi, Kamiyacho or Onarimon stations, admission is free and facilities are wheelchair accessible with barrier-free design throughout the grounds.

The temple houses a secret Black Buddha statue worshipped for victory prayers and operates a café within its grounds, creating an unusual blend of spirituality and modernity.
