Tsuruta Dam

The Tsuruta Dam spans across the Sendai River, providing irrigation and flood control capabilities for the surrounding agricultural communities of Kumamoto Prefecture.

The dam underwent a major redevelopment project in 2007 following an extreme flood event in 2006, requiring extensive engineering work at depths beyond 60 meters.

Visitors can access the dam via public transportation from Kumamoto City, with designated observation areas and walking paths offering views of the reservoir.

The redevelopment project introduced floating-type upstream-side cofferdams and specialized water discharge systems, setting new standards for dam renovation techniques.
