Praia da Balança

Praia da Balança is a narrow beach tucked between high cliffs on the eastern side of Ponta da Piedade, with distinctive orange and yellow rock formations surrounding it. The beach is best visited at low tide, as high tide covers much of the sand and leaves only rocks and cliffs visible.

The coast has been shaped over thousands of years by wave action and weather, creating small caves, arches, and the distinctive rock formations seen today. This natural erosion has carved the landscape into its current form with towering cliffs and sculptured rocks.

The beach takes its name from an ancient rock formation that resembles balance scales, a detail that reflects how local people perceive and name features of their landscape. This naming tradition shows a close connection between the community and the natural shapes that define their coastline.

The beach is difficult to reach on foot due to a steep and challenging descent from the cliffs, so most visitors take a boat or kayak from Lagos instead. There are no facilities on the beach such as restrooms, cafes, or lifeguards, so bring your own water, snacks, and sun protection.

A single ancient rock formation that resembles balance scales stands in the water close to the beach and gave the place its name. This distinctive stone is small but remarkably noticeable, becoming a recognizable landmark for visitors exploring the area.
