Mount Bonnell rises 775 feet above sea level, offering panoramic views of Lake Austin, the Colorado River, and the downtown skyline from its summit.
George W. Bonnell, a Texas independence soldier and newspaper publisher who documented the frontier in 1838, gave his name to this elevation.
The limestone monument at the peak commemorates the Covert family's 1939 donation of the 5.36-acre land to create a public park.
Visitors need to climb 102 limestone steps through dense tree coverage to reach the observation point, which remains open until 10 PM daily.
The peak contains several natural caves where frontiersman W.A.A Wallace took shelter during the early settlement period of Texas.
