Mount Erymanthos, Mountain range in Achaea and Elis, Greece
Mount Erymanthos is a mountain range stretching across limestone terrain in Achaea and Elis with its highest peak, Olonos, reaching about 2,224 meters. The massif transitions through different zones, from pine forests at lower elevations to higher alpine areas and rocky slopes.
The mountain range received its first legal protection status in 1995 when it was designated as part of the Natura 2000 network. This marked the beginning of formal conservation efforts for the area.
The mountain appears in Greek mythology as the site where Hercules captured the Erymanthian boar during his legendary quest. This place embodies how ancient stories remain woven into the local landscape and continue to shape how people understand the region.
The mountain is accessible through hiking trails that lead from nearby villages such as Micha and Alepochori, passing through varied terrain and vegetation. Visitors should prepare for changing conditions as altitude and exposure differ significantly between different routes and seasons.
Two major water systems originate from the massif and flow in opposite directions: one feeds the Gulf of Patras while the other drains toward the Alfeios river basin. This watershed division creates two distinct hydrological zones within the mountain range.
