Acropolis & Fortification Castle of Mystras, Medieval fortress on Mount Taygetos, Greece
The fortified complex extends across three distinct zones at different elevations, including the Upper City, Lower City, and Outer City with defensive walls.
William II of Villehardouin constructed the fortress in 1249, which later became the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea until 1460.
The churches of Mystras display advanced medieval Greek architectural elements and contain extensive collections of Byzantine period frescoes.
The archaeological site requires sturdy walking shoes due to steep pathways, and visiting during morning hours provides better lighting for viewing the frescoes.
The Palace of Despots features a three-story design with an audience hall at the top level and preserved residential quarters below.
