Archaeological site of Mystra

The archaeological site of Mystra extends across a hillside, featuring fortress walls, churches, monasteries, and a Byzantine palace complex.

Founded in 1249 by Frankish prince William II de Villehardouin, Mystra became a major Byzantine center until its capture by Ottoman forces in 1460.

The churches of Mystra contain extensive frescoes that demonstrate the development of Byzantine painting techniques during the Palaeologan Renaissance period.

Two entrance points provide access to the site, with the lower gate offering an easier walking route through the ruins than the steep upper entrance.

The Pantanassa Monastery within the archaeological site maintains an active community of nuns, continuing centuries of religious traditions at Mystra.
