The Taygetus mountain range extends 100 kilometers from central Peloponnese to Cape Matapan, with its highest peak reaching 2405 meters in elevation.
Ancient Greek texts, including Homer's Odyssey, document Taygetus as one of Europe's earliest recorded mountain names, associated with the mythological nymph Taygete.
The summit hosts an annual festival on July 20th at the stone church of Profitis Ilias, featuring traditional ceremonies and a ceremonial bonfire.
The path to Profitis Ilias summit takes three hours to complete, with a mountain refuge available at the beginning of the trail.
The mountain's shadow creates a triangular shape on the Messinian Gulf waters during sunrise, visible from specific observation points.
