Taygetos Mountain Peak, Prophet Elias, Mountain peak in Peloponnese, Greece.

Mount Taygetos rises to 2407 meters with its summit called Prophet Elias, creating a natural boundary between the regions of Laconia and Messenia in southern Greece. The peak is crowned by a small white chapel that can be seen from far away on clear days, and several hiking routes lead to the top from different starting points.

The mountain served ancient Sparta as a strategic shield, with its steep slopes providing natural defense against invasions from early times onward. During the medieval period, the region gained importance as Mystras grew into a major center of Byzantine civilization on its slopes.

The summit's name comes from the prophet Elias, a religious figure honored in local tradition and belief. The small chapel at the top remains a place where visitors and pilgrims gather today, keeping this spiritual connection alive.

The hiking routes to the summit require good physical fitness and take several hours to complete on average. It is best to start early in the morning, wear comfortable hiking boots, and bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.

On July 20th, locals light a large bonfire at the summit chapel that glows visibly from many kilometers away. This yearly ritual honoring Prophet Elias has been an important moment in the region's calendar for generations.
