Líthica-Pedreres de s’Hostal, Botanical garden in Ciutadella, Spain
Líthica-Pedreres de s'Hostal is a botanical garden built within a former limestone quarry, spanning five hectares with stone walls, native plants, and fruit trees. The site preserves the original quarry landscape and creates distinct zones with different types of vegetation throughout.
The quarry supplied calcarenite stone blocks for local buildings until 1994. The Lithica Foundation then began transforming it into a botanical garden.
The gardens display traditional Menorcan stone-cutting techniques through stone mazes, herb labyrinths, and outdoor art installations. Visitors can observe how ancient craftsmanship has been woven into the modern garden design.
Wear comfortable walking shoes as paths wind through deep quarry walls and terrain is uneven. Morning visits are usually less crowded and offer better lighting to appreciate the stone features and plantings.
The deep quarry walls create distinct microclimates that support different plant species. This natural temperature variation between sun-exposed surfaces and shaded gaps allows the site to display a wider range of plants than typical gardens.
