CSKT Bison Range, Wildlife park in Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana, United States
The CSKT Bison Range is a nature reserve with diverse landscape types including grasslands, Douglas fir forests, ponderosa pine forests, riparian areas, and ponds spread across the Flathead region. The terrain supports varied habitats for the animals and plants that live here.
The reserve was created in 1908 when Congress funded the purchase of land to protect bison herds. This was among the first federal efforts to set aside land specifically for wildlife conservation.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes use this land as home for their community and traditional ways of living. Visitors witness how people here connect with the seasons and the movements of animals across the landscape.
Visitors can use two main scenic drives to observe the animals that live here, including bison, elk, black bears, bighorn sheep, and numerous bird species. Driving at a relaxed pace lets you explore the different habitats and environments throughout the land.
The land protects the intermountain bunchgrass prairie, one of North America's most threatened natural environments that has largely vanished elsewhere. This rare grassland type survives here because of ongoing conservation efforts.
