Golden Gates Beach

Golden Gates Beach is a sandy shoreline at West Cape Howe backed by steep vegetated cliffs that create a natural amphitheater facing the Southern Ocean. The beach stretches in a gentle curve with rocky outcrops visible at each end of the cove.

European explorers charted this coast during 19th century surveys and gave it the name Golden Gates. The headland later became part of a larger protected reserve designed to preserve the wild southern coastline.

West Cape Howe holds deep connections to indigenous communities, who maintained strong relationships with the coastal environment through generations.

Access to the beach requires driving on a sandy track that can be challenging after rain. Strong ocean currents and rough surf conditions make swimming risky, so visitors should exercise caution and consider water safety carefully.

A powerful rip current consistently pulls water seaward and makes swimming here exceptionally hazardous. This natural feature has long earned the place a fearsome reputation among swimmers and beach visitors.
