Bilgola Beach, Southeast-facing beach in Northern Beaches, Australia.
Bilgola Beach is a southeast-facing sandy cove on Sydney's Northern Beaches with a stretch of about 500 meters of sand. The beach is framed by high headlands to the north and rocky Newport Head to the south.
Robert Henderson received a 100-acre land grant in 1822 and named the area Belgoola, which gradually transformed into the name Bilgola over time.
The name Bilgola comes from the Aboriginal word Belgoula, which describes the swirling water patterns and steep cliffs where cabbage palms grow among the rocks.
The beach has a large rock pool with multiple lanes, public facilities including toilets and showers, and picnic areas throughout. A kiosk on site serves food and drinks for visitors all day long.
The beach contains a single sandbar affected by two shifting water currents that move seasonally. Permanent currents also form against the rocks at both ends, which swimmers should be aware of.
