Bungan Beach

Bungan Beach is a sandy shore sheltered between steep sandstone and shale cliffs along the Newport coastline. The beach stretches roughly 600 meters and sits beneath rocky headlands that rise 40 to 50 meters above the water.

A lifesaving club established operations here in 1953 and introduced formal safety measures for swimmers. This brought organized oversight to the beach that continues to shape how people use the water today.

The northern cove draws surfers who value the natural wave conditions created by the rocky headlands. This section has become a gathering spot for people who pursue the sport and enjoy the coastal setting.

You reach the beach by walking down a steep private driveway off Myola Road, where parking spots are limited near the gate. Coming early helps you secure a spot, especially on warm days when the lot fills quickly.

Two permanent rip currents flow against the rocks at each end, while additional currents shift positions along the central zone. Understanding these water patterns helps you choose where to swim safely.
