Zoo Città della Domenica, Animal park in Perugia, Italy.
Zoo Città della Domenica is an animal park on the outskirts of Perugia, set across a wooded hillside with walking paths connecting different animal enclosures and green areas. The park focuses mainly on European and Italian species, including reptiles, birds, and mammals spread across several sections.
The park opened in 1963, founded by the Spagnoli family, and was the first leisure park of its kind in Italy. Over the decades it expanded and began taking in animals as part of conservation efforts alongside its original purpose as a family destination.
The name "Città della Domenica" means "Sunday City", a reference to the old Italian habit of spending Sunday as a family day out. Many families from Perugia still come here on weekends to spend a day together outdoors.
A small train runs on weekends and stops at several points around the park, which can be helpful if you have young children or need a break from walking. The park is set on a hillside, so comfortable shoes are a good idea for the paths between enclosures.
The park is home to Burro, a white donkey from the island of Asinara off Sardinia, one of the rarest donkey breeds in Italy. These animals are protected on the island, and the park is one of the few places on the mainland where you can see one.
